If you’re in Portugal and you’re looking for a dreamy day trip that blends medieval charm with a touch of zen, Óbidos and Bacalhôa Buddha Eden make the perfect combo! At least I think so, because, let’s say, Óbidos is still on my bucket list. Yup, life decided to switch things up for me.

Bacalhôa Buddha Eden
A Hidden Gem of Peace and Serenity

Located in Bombarral, this incredible garden is Europe’s largest oriental garden, covering 35 hectares of pure peace and stunning landscapes. Expect massive Buddha statues, intricate pagodas, lakes filled with koi fish and dogs enjoying art. Yup you can bring your dogs! It’s the kind of place where you suddenly consider quitting everything to become a monk (until you remember you can’t really meditate).

What to Expect:

✨ A beautiful mix of Asian-inspired sculptures and modern art

🌿 A peaceful stroll through bamboo gardens and lakes

🍷 Wine tasting at the Bacalhôa vineyard nearby if you fancy a treat

💰 Entrance fee: 12€ with the train ride, 6€ without it (which I recommend because: cheaper and you explore more)

Pro Tips:

👟 Bring comfy shoes; there’s a lot of walking involved (around 2 hours).

⌚️ Visit early or late afternoon to avoid crowds.

📷 Don’t forget your camera – this place is a magical dream!

Óbidos
The Fairytale Town I Almost Visited

A medieval town with white-washed houses, cobblestone streets, and enough charm to make you feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook. And throughout the year, this charming town comes to life with incredible festivals — from chocolate to Christmas magic, there’s always something happening. And yes, of course I made a post about it for you guys! You can check it out here!

What You Can Do in Óbidos (Even Though I Didn’t):

🏰 Walk the castle walls for breathtaking panoramic views
🍒 Try the famous ginjinha de Óbidos

📚 Wander through the beautiful bookshops (there’s even one inside a church)

🥧 Enjoy local pastries like “pastel de Óbidos”
🎭 Visit it’s amazing festivals (check it here)

Getting There & Practical Info

🚗 The easiest option. It’s about a 1-hour drive from Lisbon.
🚌 Take a bus to Óbidos, then a taxi/uber to Buddha Eden.
📅 Spring and autumn for fewer crowds and pleasant weather.

Final Thoughts

Despite missing Óbidos, Bacalhôa Buddha Eden was definitely worth the trip! And honestly… I already want to go back. If you manage to visit both, you’ll get the best of two worlds: a peaceful retreat and a medieval adventure. Plus, don’t forget, Óbidos has some incredible festivals! Time your visit right, and you might just squeeze in a 3-in-1 experience!

Now tell me, have you been to either of these places? It’s okay if you’re Portuguese and haven’t. No judgment—I get it. 😆
